Fields of research and teaching

  • Research: Cross-media analysis of quality features (such as complexity and interactivity) of data journalistic products like visualizations and stories, integrating user analytics, surveys and editorial decision criteria
  • Teaching: Advanced methods in data journalism (coding, scraping, automization)


  • since 2017: Data journalist and editor, Head of DW's data-driven journalism team
  • since 2017: Freelance data journalism trainer (Workshops for KAS' Journalism Academy, Columbia University, HMKW, and trainee programs of various public broadcasters in Germany)
  • 2016: Post-graduate training at Columbia Journalism School' Lede Program in New York City: Introduction into data science and coding with Python, pSQL and d3.js
  • since 2016: Freelance data journalist and author for the interactive background magazine Der Kontext
  • 2014 - 2015: Head of Online at DW's crossmedia magazine Life Links, with a particular focus on a young global audiences
  • 2013: Extra occupational post-graduate training: "Introduction to Infographics" (MOOC) by Alberto Cairo at the Knight Center at the University of Texas and "Graphic Design for Beginners" (Online-Kurs) at the University of Arts in London (UAL, Central Saint Martins)
  • 2012 - 2014: Multimedia editor at DW's crossmedia magazine Global Ideas, with particular focus on climate and environmental issues
  • 2006 - 2011: Journalistic traineeship at the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation's Journalism Program, complemented with internships at WDR5 Leonardo and the science desks at Handelsblatt and Zeit Online
  • 2009 - 2011: Master's degree (M.Sc.) in molecular biomedicine (University of Münster), with particular focus on neuro- and cell biology
  • 2006 - 2009: Bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) in life sciences (University of Münster), with modules in social competence, computer science, physics and chemistry
